FAQ's

ColorBond options for your shed

Q.
What's the difference between BMT and TCT cladding?
A.

Are you getting thin tin?  Insist on Base Metal Thickness (BMT) to manage your risk.

Beware of any shed quotes which specify Total Coated Thickness (TCT) to describe steel product thickness, which may not be suitable for design loads under Australian Standards.

Shed Boss uses genuine BlueScope Steel, with wall and roofing cladding specified as Base Metal Thickness (BMT) not TCT. Remember, BMT is the relevant measurement for structural strength.

Shed Boss follows best Australian practice by using a minimum of 0.42 base metal thickness high tensile steel for roofs. Some manufacturers only use 0.30mm - even on the roof!

What sort of warranties have you been offered?

As all Shed Boss sheds are made from Stramit steel building products, you've got a double advantage. You get Stramit's warranties on the performance of their products, plus BlueScope Steel's warranties* on the ColorBond and Zincalume steel.

Who's going to help if something goes wrong?

If you have a problem with imported steel materials, can you be sure someone's going to be there to help you? Backed by Stramit and BlueScope, you have local technical representatives to provide superior technical advice.

Is it up to standard?

All the materials in a Shed Boss shed are manufactured in accordance with Australian Standards. Quality control systems in the factories make sure products are manufactured accurately to specifications.

The ColorBond and Zincalume products in a Shed Boss shed have a zinc/aliminium substrate that lasts up to four times longer than some imported galvanised coatings.

The ColorBond paint formula resists fading, chipping and cracking under Australia's harsh UV conditions.

Have the products been tested under Australian conditions?

ColorBond steel is tested to Australian Standard AS2728 (for pre-painted steel sheet) which requires exposure to harsh sunlight and corrosive conditions for 48 months continuously at different sites. The materials also undergo accelerated indoor testing to ensure world-best products.

Is it watertight?

Shed Boss sheds feature Stramit roofing and walling products with anti-capillary side laps to keep even wind-blown rain out.

As  Shed Boss sheds, garages and carports are made from Stramit steel building products, there's more behind your shed than you realise.

For starters, you've got the backing of one of Australia's leading building product manufacturers.  You also have Stramit Building Product warranties on performance as well as BlueScope Steel warranties* on the materials.

And you have top-quality Australian steel and technical know-how based on experience of harsh Australian conditions.

Stramit Building Products is a member of the Fletcher Building Group, the largest diversified building products group in Australasia, which has operations throughout Australia, New Zealand and internationally.

Q.
What colour scheme/combination would you recommend?
A.

The profile and pitch of your shed roof as well as the location of the shed should all be considered when choosing its colour as it may play a substantial role in the overall look of yourhome. The chosen roof style also affects the general impression of your property, for example, a steep gabled roof will have more aesthetic dominance than a skillion roof.

Janne Petrie, from The Colour Designers, explains: “In situations where the roof is a dominant feature of the shed or your home, it is important to ensure that the colour does not over shadow the entire aesthetic of the building so it’s best to opt for a mid tone colour. In these cases, roofing made from COLORBOND® steel in the more neutral colours of Surfmist®, Woodland Grey®, Dune® or Ironstone® are ideal choices.”

Surfmist®

Woodland Grey®

Dune®

Ironstone®

With its crisp, clean lines, roofing made from COLORBOND® steel can create an attractive roof that works well with most home designs including traditional styles, contemporary designs and everything in between.

The second consideration when choosing the colour of the roof is the location of the home and its surrounding natural and built environments. With a range of 20 designer colours, finding the right colour is easy with COLORBOND® steel whether it be for a rural, coastal, city or suburban location.

Janne Petrie advises: “If the home is located in a rural area that is surrounded by a bush or green landscape then muted tones are the best colour choices. Roofing made COLORBOND® steel in colours such as the muted greens of Bushland®, Wilderness®, Pale Eucalypt® or the subdued brown of Jasper® are most suitable.

Bushland®

Wilderness®

Pale Eucalypt®

Jasper®

For homes in a coastal environment, it’s best to capture the seaside ambiance. Roofing made COLORBOND® steel in subdued blues such as Evening Haze® or Windspray®, more arresting blues such as Deep Ocean®, or even the sandy qualities of Sandbank® are particularly effective.

Evening Haze®

Windspray®

Deep Ocean®

Sandbank®

For inner city areas where heritage buildings are the norm, more traditional roof colours are required such Manor Red® or Headland® which are part of COLORBOND® steel’s 20 designers colours.

Manor Red®

Headland®

If the home is situated in a more modern suburban area then a more striking roof colour may be the best option with roofing made from COLORBOND® steel in the colour Monument® or Loft® creating a prominent yet appealing feature.”

Monument®

Loft®

Visit the ColourBond website for more details.

The COLORBOND® steel colours shown on this site have been reproduced to represent actual product colours as accurately as possible. However, we recommend checking your chosen colour against an actual sample of the product before purchasing, as limitations of web palette colours affect colour tones. Visit the Shed Boss Fleurieu display sample for an actual sample.

Please also note that if you are printing this page the colours will not be accurate using most printers and should not be used for colour matching purposes.

Council development approval

Q.
Can I build on (or near) the boundary?
A.

Generally, yes.

The structure may be located on the boundary with consent from council – with the use of box gutters and a rainhead (your shed then forms part of the boundary, and will replace any existing fence line).

If you are not building on the boundary, a minimum of 900mm for an enclosed structure (such as a shed or garage); and  600mm away for an open structure (such as a Carport, Awning or Pergola) may be required.

Technical

Q.
BCA Compliant Sheds
A.

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) is produced and maintained by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) on behalf of the Australian Government and State and Territory Governments. The BCA has been given the status of building regulations by all States and Territories.

The goal of the BCA is to enable the achievement of nationally consistent, minimum necessary standards of relevant, health, safety (including structural safety and safety from fire), amenity and sustainability objectives efficiently.

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) defines buildings in 10 Building Classes. Sheds generally fall into class 6,7,8,9 & 10a depending on their intended use.

Class 1 buildings are dwellings. Appreciable changes are required to a standard class10a (non-habitable) shed to allow it to comply with the BCA as a Class 1 structure.

Class 10 a (non-habitable) sheds should not be supplied or deemed suitable for use as a habitable dwelling.

The Building Code of Australia assigns four different building importance levels for structures. The assigned Importance level is consistent with the consequences of building failure and the risk to human life (or property) Level 1 is the lowest and level 4 the highest.

  • Level 1 - Buildings or structures presenting a low degree of hazard to life and other property in the case of failure – example isolated farm sheds
  • Level 2 - Buildings or structures not included in importance levels 1, 3 or 4 – example garages, industrial buildings, and school shelters with less than 250 students.
  • Level 3 - Buildings or structures that are designed to contain a large number of people – example School shelters with more than 250 students
  • Level 4 - Buildings or structures that are essential to post-disaster recovery or associated with hazardous facilities – example CFA fire sheds

A building that does not comply with the BCA poses an increased risk of failure and a potential threat to community safety.

For absolute peace of mind, as licenced builders Shed Boss Fleurieu can provide assistance in determining the correct importance level and building specification for your shed.

Q.
Is there any welding in a Shed Boss shed?
A.

No, our range of Shed Boss sheds feature the Morinda glove section (patented)

Designed to fit like a glove, combining both bolt and screw connections, this knee joint is voted the best in the industry. It's "glove tight" design ensures engineering integrity.

Beware of any welded brackets, particulary if the weld is onto relatively thin "C" Purlin under 4mm.  As the heat is applied and melts the purlin, under microscope, a trough is often revealed to be two thirds the thickness of the purlin.

Using welded brackets:

  • The protective Galvanizing is destroyed.
  • Manufacturers who still persist with this process usually use a very cheap silver frost paint as rust protection.
  • Always insist on a non-welded product.

Q.
What is the Morinda glove section?
A.

Joints are the most important engineering consideration in your shed and ours are recognised as one of the best in the industry. The Shed Boss patented Morinda™ Glove Section Bracket Systemincludes fully wrap around knee and apex joints that are made from heavy galvanised steel and feature pre-punched screw holes for quick and correct installation. Non-welded and corrosion free, Morinda™ brackets are securely fixed with galvanised bolts to make sure they stay strong and last.

Because it is a fully wrap around moulded section, it absorbs most of the twist encountered in high wind conditions. The Morinda Glove Section was originally developed for cyclonic conditions. Remember, a shed is only as strong as these joints!

Q.
What quality fixing screws do you use?
A.

Using the correct fastener for your shed is crucial to its long term performance and good looks.

All Shed Boss buildings are fitted with Class 4 fasteners, which are colour matched to the ColorBond sheet colours you select, resulting in a quality touch to your very valuable asset.

Corrosion free Class 4 roofing and walling fasteners are compliant to Australian Standards (AS 3566) for use in severe marine and coastal environments.

All Shed Boss roofs are fixed to the same standards and in the same way that a house roof is fastened - fitted with full neoprene washers on the roof and  the wall cladding, which cushion and seal these self-drilling screws. This eliminates the possibility of leaks and rust, so your Shed Boss building will stay dry and sealed in the heaviest rain.

Can you do the complete project?

Q.
Can you do the complete project?
A.

As we are the builder (BLD 164301), we take total responsibility for your project. As we are locally owned and operated, you can receive full back-up support.

By choosing Shed Boss for a complete project, you only need to deal with one company. We take care of everything, from start – to finish, managing your entire project. We arrange all work to be performed from supply of all materials, installation and concrete.

If you choose Shed Boss, you don’t have to take on the risk of being an “owner builder”

If your contract with any other shed retailer is only for the supply of the shed kit (materials), and you are simply being “referred” to tradespeople with an “estimate” of the construction/slab cost, then you might be considered an owner builder.

As an owner-builder, you can expect your responsibilities to include the following (sourced from the Office of Business and Consumer Affairs):
• provide plans, specifications, and engineering and technical details
lodge plans and other relevant documentation with local council.
• obtain water and sewerage diagrams and all other approvals from the appropriate authorities, such as the local council and water authority
arrange public liability insurance
• ensure occupational health and safety awareness for all tradespeople
• order, deliver, store and manage materials
oversee and schedule all aspects of the building process, such as the arrival and departure of trades people
• hire a supervisor or building surveyor as you will need a qualified person to sign the Statement of Compliance for the building work
• ensure that building indemnity insurance has been taken out if building work is contracted for $12,000 or more and where council approval is required
coordinate trades people
 • arrange for the shed kit to be delivered to the site
• set out the site, including earthworks.
• answer all enquiries from authorities about the project
• keep records of the project
• pay trades people
• control costs
• deal with all problems, delays and disputes
• sight and inspect all tradespersons' insurance policies
• ensure you, as the owner-builder, have appropriate insurance cover as you build.

OR -  Let Shed Boss Fleurieu take care of the hassle for you - From planning and council approvals right through to unveiling a garage or shed that we will both be proud of.

Having built hundreds over the past several years, we have a reputation for getting the job done on time, to budget, with no worries.

Concrete

Q.
Why do you pour the concrete slab first?
A.

Did you know that pouring a concrete slab inside your shed can void your BlueScope steel warranty?

The BlueScope steel warranty for ColorBond steel states:

" the Material must not be used as concrete formwork or be immersed, including during construction"

BlueScope steel also provides further guidance on using ColorBond steel in Sheds & Garages in this Technical Bulletin

This is a poor building practice which some builders use to achieve a cheaper quote,  however the true cost is the likelihood of your shed rusting out in as little as 2 years and voiding the BlueScope steel warranty

Pouring concrete inside your shed will result in accelerated corrosion due to contact with wet cement, which is strongly alkaline, and the shrinkage of cured concrete which enables the build up of dirt and debris left in the gap left between the slab and the wall.

At Shed Boss, we pour the concrete slab to a precise size prior to construction – with the drip-free edge of the wall sheeting extending 50mm down the side of the slab, without touching the slab itself.  This enables moisture to drain freely from the sheared edge of the steel.

This means that the risk of corrosion caused by condensation, or hosing the shed out, is eliminated.  Plus, you can take advantage of the full BlueScope warranty*

*Warranty terms and conditions apply.

Roof pitch

Q.
What pitch roof can I have on my shed?
A.

The most common roof pitch for domestic garages is 15 degrees.

Unique to Shed Boss, is the Multi Pitch bracketry which allows for variable pitch roofs (up to 30 degrees) without the need to change costly bracketry whilst retaining all the strength and stability qualities of the standard knee and apex joint.

The Multi Pitch, with its unique Hinge effect, also allows for easier dismantling or repositioning of an existing building.

What type of bracketry is used in your sheds?

Q.
Footing Brackets
A.

These massive heavy duty galvanised hold down brackets are cast into slab, allowing portal frames to simply swing up into position. Just one of the reasons why Shed Boss sheds are the easiest to install. Beware of builders who use cheap friction bolts or chemical anchors (glue).

Our heavy galvanized steel anchor brackets are specially designed and set in concrete for increased hold down strength to withstand the fiercest weather conditions in South Australia.  Fully engineered for the highest  design wind speed of up to 87 metres per second.

Due to the use of stirrups, the frames of the shed are lifted off the concrete floor by 5-10mm ensuring that concrete will not speed up the corrosion process which in turn gives your a shed a longer lifespan.

Q.
The Morinda APEX joint glove section
A.

Similar to the knee, the Apex Joint's enhanced strength and rigidity is achieved with the fully wrap around "MorindaGlove section, which connects both the web and the flanges of the truss and column.  This has produced an extremely good looking joint. As with the knee, the pre-punched hole centres allow forhuge time saving during installation

Q.
The Morinda Knee Joint Glove section
A.

Voted best in the industry.  This incredible invention allows for the most stable and strongest knee joint in the industry due to its full wrap around and dual use of heavy duty bolts and screws to fix.  Remember, this is the most important engineering point in your shed - both sides of the knee joint should be fixed.

Clearly we advise, don't settle for a single plate system when you can have this superior full wrap around Glove Section.

Roller Doors

Q.
How does a roller door stop water coming in my shed?
A.

The Shed Boss difference: we build our sheds with a 15mm deep recess in the concrete slab under each roller door - making it impossible for damaging water to enter the building.

Be aware of- Concrete slab surfaces finished with a "helicopter" circular trowel can have surface variations of up to 2mm - if these rises and depressions in the slab surface occur under a roller door, heavy rain will result in flooding.

Q.
Roller Doors - Wider doors, better access
A.

Our standard roller doors are a full 2.750m (over 9 feet), giving easy, drive-in access for even the largest 4WD vehicle.  Or we can fit a single, 5m wide roller door, or a modern Panel Lift door.  Of course, we will fit a remote control system (with 2 hand-sets) if you require.

Wind lock option - recommended in high wind areas for added strength and security. As about our optional wind lock assembly.

Windows

Q.
Can you fit a window in my shed?
A.

Fitting your shed with a  window allows natural light to filter throughout your shed, without compromising on security -  as our windows are supplied standard with a keyed lock.

The windows we install in our sheds are the same quality used in residential properties. The sliding mechanism is trouble free, with the fitted flyscreen keeping the insects out whilst allowing fresh air in.
